Crew Shower RepairPrivate Yacht, Pacific Coast

Lack of detailed maintenance allowed the base of the crew’s shower door to rot away, causing minor leaking and rot that extended into the wall. One glass door hinge was wearing away at the metal joint and the door scraped the rotting base because of the failing hinge. I removed the door and hinge, then removed the rotted wood to let the base dry out. A few layers of wood putty were built up, and then the base section was painted with marine-grade 2-part paint. A custom rubber strip was cut and siliconed to the bottom of the shower door to direct water runoff.

In between layers of wood putty to build up the rotted base, and working fractional amounts of steel epoxy into the hinge.

For the hinge, I filled in the worn metal with a steel epoxy. As I worked on it, I stated to the engineer that I needed precision tools. He chuckled, “There’s no precision on this boat, mate.”
The following day as we were organizing hardware, we came across two rusty calipers. We both laughed, “No precision here,” and discarded the unused tools. Sometimes we can't get caught up in the minisule details; it's more worthwhile to just to keep things maintained or periodically get new items.
