MEDIA RECOGNITION
Riding the wave of interest

Being a text-based Web site, alaskahandywoman.com came up in the top 10 of most search engines for “handywoman”, making it easy for the media to find me. One spot in media can fall into more exposure if the story interests other journalists. All interested parties contacted me through the Web site before the year’s end. In an attempt to ride the media wave, I hired professional photographers for headshots and videographers for audition tapes.

Web Site Commentary:
The Web site changed conditions by taking on a bolder look. The background was turned black and the side menu incorporated ice blue and white box tiling. I put some of the professional photos online to add a stronger visual aspect.
Later in December of 2003, the site design was dramatically changed to reflect an earthy, natural appearance for a NPR audience. The background color was changed to beige and other neutral, muted colors, with the side menu designed to look like wood grain. The site began promoting Handywoman’s Companion.

"I've never heard of a small Fairbanks business that was able to capture national publicity within a few months of its creation. That Patane did this without spending a lot of money or doing anything outrageous is also a marvel. It all seems to be a confluence of national media attention on women who are handy and Patane's ability to make herself stand out by using modern tools."
